Chinatown Passport
Privacy Policy
Chinatown Passport is a free, browser-based passport for exploring Vancouver Chinatown. We collect as little as we can to run the prize draw and let you keep your stamps. Here is exactly what that means — in plain language.
The short version
- Your stamps live in your own browser. We only receive a copy if you choose to save your email.
- We ask for your email once, after your first stamp, so you can enter the draw and restore your stamps on another device.
- We never sell your data, and we only email you if you tick the consent box. You can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data at any time.
What we collect
We keep collection deliberately small. Depending on how you use the app, this may include:
- Your email address and consent — only if you fill in the “Save your stamps” form. We store the email you enter and the fact that you ticked the consent box to enter the draw and receive occasional updates.
- Your collected-stamp list — which participating venues you've stamped, and when. Until you save your email, this list lives only in your browser's local storage on your device.
- An anonymous device id — a random identifier generated in your browser to group your stamps together. It is not your name and is not linked to any identity unless you choose to add your email.
- Basic anti-abuse signals — when you submit the form, our server briefly uses your IP address to rate-limit requests and block spam. We do not use it to profile or track you.
We do not collect your name, phone number, payment details, or precise location. We do not run third-party advertising trackers.
Why we collect it
- To run the prize draw. A completed passport of 8 stamps enters you to win a getaway.
- To send occasional updates — only with your express consent, and only about Chinatown Passport and participating venues.
- To let you restore your stamps across devices. If you switch phones, we email a short, single-use code to confirm it's really you, then bring your saved stamps back. We never reveal whether an email is on file to anyone who doesn't have that code.
- To keep the service working — preventing spam, abuse, and floods so the draw stays fair.
Consent (CASL)
We only send you marketing email if you give express consent — the consent checkbox on the save form is unticked by default and you choose to tick it. Every email we send includes an easy way to unsubscribe, and we honour those requests promptly, as required by Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).
Where your data is stored
Saved entries are stored in a managed Postgres database (Neon). Restore codes are short-lived (about 15 minutes) and single-use. Stamps you haven't saved by email never leave your device — they sit in your browser's local storage and you can clear them any time by clearing your browser data.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that help us run the app — our database host and the email service that delivers your restore codes and updates — and only as much as they need to do that job.
Your choices and rights
Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you can:
- Unsubscribe from updates at any time using the link in any email.
- Access or correct the information we hold about you.
- Request deletion of your email and saved entry from our database.
- Clear your local stamps yourself by clearing this site's data in your browser.
To make any of these requests, email us at chinatownpassport88@gmail.com.
Children
Chinatown Passport is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and revise the date above. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
